Organizations to Know


American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) - An international not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world by serving as an educator, leader, spokesperson and professional association.

American Solar Energy Society (ASES) - Established in 1954; this is the nation's leading nonprofit association of solar professionals & grassroots advocates.

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - The voice of the US standards and conformity system.

Architecture 2030  - An international not-for-profit organization devoted to improving architectural design to make it more earth-friendly. 

Clean Technology and Sustainable Industries Organization
(CTSI) - Core purpose is to provide a cross industry community to promote clean technology development, profitable commercialization and global integration of sustainable industry practices, enabling the transformation of businesses, governments and society towards a more sustainable global economy.

EarthWays Center - A division of the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Their mission is to promote sustainability through environmental education and improving the built environment.  They offer many classes, events, and tours of their energy efficient remodeled house at 3817 Grandel Square, St. Louis, MO 63108.

Energy Information Administration (EIA) - Provides, official energy statistics from the U.S. Government.

Home Builders Association - The Home Builders Association of Greater St. Louis and Eastern Missouri helps create a region that promotes and protects the viability of the building industry.  They have developed standards home construction, the Green Building Initiative (GBI) which verifies homes as “green”.

Missouri Coalition for the Environment - Not-for-profit citizen action organization advocating for clean water, air and open space.  Erin Noble (314) 727-0600.

Missouri Votes Conservation (MVC) - A non-partisan statewide organization that advocates for pro-environment legislation and political candidates in Missouri.  They represent the broad diversity of conservation interests in the state - from environmentalists, scientists and business owners to hunters, anglers and independent farmers.  Their goal is to achieve sound conservation public policy in Missouri.  (314) 725-9494.

Passive House Alliance US (PHAUS) - A non-profit organization created to support the Passive House building energy standard through public outreach, education, support of industry professionals and advocacy.

Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) - A 501c(3) nonprofit organization that provides training, education and research to promote implementation of the Passive House Building Energy standard, as well as the design approach and techniques to accomplish that standard.

National Association of Home Builders - A Washington, D.C.-based trade association whose mission is to enhance the climate for housing and the building industry.

Natural Resources Defense Council  (NRDC) - the nation's most effective environmental action group, combining the grassroots power of 1.2 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of more than 350 lawyers, scientists and other professionals.

Nature Conservancy - Using science and partnerships to protect Earth's most important natural places - for you and future generations.

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) - A not-for-profit organization that works to help business and government move toward a more secure, just, prosperous, and life-sustaining world.  This is done mostly through developing energy efficiency projects.

Sustainable Building Industry Council (SBIC) - An independent, not-for-profit organization and a pioneer advocate of the whole building approach to sustainable facilities.

US Dept. of Energy: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (DOE) - A fantastic resource on all matters about Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE).  This is a great resource for those just getting started and who want to learn more.

US Green Building Council (USGBC) - The U.S. Green Building Council is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation.

Standards and Codes to Know


ANSI National Green Building Standard In collaboration with the International Code Council and the NAHB, this product is the first ANSI standard on sustainable green building.

EnergyStar
  The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) runs the EnergyStar program.  The Energy Star logo can be found on appliances and electronic equipment, and indicates that the product uses energy than other models. EnergyStar also has a program for certifying homes that have low energy use.

IECC 2009
The International Energy Construction Code Version 2009 is the current version.

LEED
  The US Green Building Council has put out a set of building standards placing it under the banner of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).  These standards can be used to certify that a home building has achieved both low energy use and high environmental friendliness.


Passive House Standard
:-A Passive House is a very well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain and by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, etc.It must meet three very difficult criteria to be certified as a Passive House - 1)Airtight building shell ≤ 0.6 ACH @ 50 pascal pressure, measured by blower-door test. 2)Annual heat requirement ≤ 15 kWh/m2/year (4.75 kBtu/sf/yr) 3)Primary Energy ≤ 120 kWh/m2/year (38.1 kBtu/sf/yr).
